Appendix A: Note on methodology employed in the Markdata Omnibus
The statistical estimates and trends presented in the tabulations that follow are published every five years in order to provide the basis for a better understanding of the transport sector and the factors that influence its dynamics.
The statistics are derived from a large variety of sources, both national and international, and represent the most authoritative results available. Unfortunately some of the tabulated figures are somewhat dated but are the most recent figures available at the time of preparation. The Department of Transport cannot necessarily verify the accuracy of the statistics and therefore cannot accept responsibility for the figures presented. The sources are quoted for readers who may wish to follow up on the statistics.
The compilers would like to thank all the agencies that assisted in furnishing figures for their co-operation, and would also like to thank the staff of MarkData (Pty) Ltd. for the checking and proof-reading of the series.
In the brief notes that follow we point out certain selected trends that appear in the data in order to illustrate the types of conclusions that may be drawn from the statistical series.
