All holders of identity document type driving licences and those who have not converted to credit card format, will not be allowed to drive on South African roads from 01 March 2003. Drivers who have already applied for conversion but have not yet received their credit card format licences should in the meantime apply for Temporary Driving Licneces (TDL).
The National Department of Transport together with MECs also decided that this measure would not affect licences that were issued in the former Transkei, Bophuthatswana, Venda, Ciskei (TBVC) and Self-Governing territories (SGT). Their licences will continue to be valid until 1 September 2003.
The reason why TBVC and SGT territories have been experiencing difficulty is that their licences are currently not captured on the National Traffic Information System (NaTIS). Many drivers experiencing difficulties are in the Eastern Cape.
