The National Household Travel Survey is South Africa's first representative nationwide household travel survey. Statistic South Africa executed the survey on behalf of the Department in May/June 2003.
The NHTS was based on a representative sample that covered approximately 50 000 household. Interviews were successfully held with 45 000 households. The results of the NHTS provide strategic insight into the travel patterns and transport problems of the people of South Africa. In analysing the survey results, access to transport, affordability of transport and safety were highlighted.
The release of the NHTS data to stakeholders such as government departments, researchers and academic institutions to identify the kind of planning and appropriate interventions needed, aims to ensure a more effective and efficient public transport system for the country.
