Minister of Transport, Ms. Barbara Creecy, alongside Deputy Minister Mr. Mkhuleko Hlengwa and PRASA leadership, officially launched the Chris Hani to Cape Town line on 29 May 2025.
This launch celebrates the successful restoration of the Central Line – the largest commuter rail corridor in the country. The revitalization project included extensive repairs to stations, substations, and the Overhead Traction Electrification (OHTE) systems. This line is one of the Presidential Lines prioritized for recovery, aiming to improve public transportation, boost economic growth, and enhance the quality of life for thousands of commuters. The launch event underscores government’s commitment to restoring safe and efficient rail services, providing a reliable and accessible option for daily travel.
The Executive Mayor of the City of Cape Town, Councillor Geordin Hill-Lewis and the MEC for Mobility in the Western Cape were also in attendance to witness this remarkable event.
