How South Africa's road network compares to the world

  • South Africa has the 10th Longest Total (750 000 Road Length) and 18th Longest Paved Road Network in the World
  • Roads represent one of the largest public infrastructure investments in the most countries
  • South African Road Replacement Cost is R2 Trillion

Through the S'hamba Sonke Programme

  • 1100 km's of surafced road were rehabilitated
  • 3000 km's of surfaced roads sealed
  • 3926 km's of roads gravelled
  • We patched more than 1.4 million squares metres of potholes
  • 147 00 km's of roads bladed and
  • 30 billion rand to create over 23 500 fulltime equivalent jobs in the 2014/15 financial year spent
  • There are over 6 million more vehicles on our roads today than they were in 1994. The traffic looks set to continue growing - much of it on roads that are already operating at close to capacity during busy periods

  • Regulate road traffic management
  • Ensure the maintenance and development of an integrated road network through the development of standards and guidelines and oversight of the road agencies and provincial road expenditure
