Championing Global Maritime Leadership

With a proven track record of leadership, a unique geographic advantage, and unwavering commitment to the IMO’s strategic goals, South Africa seeks to strengthen its role in advancing safe, secure, and sustainable shipping for all.

Why South Africa?

Strategic Geographic Position At the crossroads of major East–West and North–South shipping routes, the Cape of Good Hope is one of the world’s most critical maritime conduits. The South African Search and Rescue (SAR) Region alone spans nearly 30 million square kilometres, reinforcing the country’s vital role in global trade, safety, and security at sea.

Proven IMO Credentials South Africa brings decades of dedicated participation at the IMO, with a history of constructive engagement and leadership, including service as Vice-Chair. Our consistent contributions demonstrate not only experience but also deep technical expertise in shaping international maritime regulations and standards.
