The Minister of Transport, Ms. Sindisiwe Chikunga officially launched the 2023/24 Festive Season Road Safety Campaign on Sunday, the 26th November at the Tsakane Stadium in the East Rand. The MECs of Transport, Community Safety and Liaison, CEOs of Transport entities, key transport stakeholders and law enforcement officers, as well as leaders and members of the interfaith community and the larger community in Tsakane and surrounding areas also joined Minister Chikunga in support and prayer for divine intervention against the carnage on the roads during the official launch of the campaign.

The focus of this year’s campaign is on the impact of alcohol on road user behavior and its contribution to the carnage. The objective of the campaign was not only to ensure smooth flows of traffic, but also to prevent negligent and reckless driving which could result in road crashes, injuries and fatalities.

The Festive Season period brings increased risks to public safety on the roads due to high traffic volumes as people travel to various destinations across the country. All major routes become busier than normal hence the need to intensify road safety education and traffic law enforcement activities in an integrated manner.
