To commemorate October Transport Month, Deputy Minister of Transport Mr. Mkhuleko Hlengwa took an important step by visiting the Eastern Cape province to assess the advancements in the maintenance of provincial roads financed by the National Department of Transport via the Provincial Road Maintenance Grant (PRMG).

The Department of Transport is utilizing the PRMG grant to enhance the quality of provincial roads. Over the span of ten years, around R106.40 billion has been allocated to the nine provinces through the PRMG.

The visit was part the oversight activities by the National Department of Transport during the ongoing October Transport Month (OTM) campaign which commenced on 1st October 2024.

In his interactions with the media, Hlengwa highlighted that the current focus will be on assessing the safety strategy and collaborating with provincial authorities to implement a successful campaign. “We are set to launch campaigns and will present the road safety strategy for this festive season to parliament. Road safety is an ongoing concern that requires a multifaceted approach, including improving road infrastructure to ensure it is safe and reliable for public use.”, stated the Deputy Minister of Transport.

Hlengwa noted that this project is a continuous initiative that the Department will be undertaking alongside the provinces. He assured that they will be traveling to different provinces to ensure the grants are utilized to their fullest potential and with maximum effectiveness.
